VAT Value Added Tax

VAT is a simplified and transparent system of tax in which tax is levied on the value additions, at each stage in the production-distribution with provision of set-off of tax paid on earlier stages. Sales tax is levied on single and first point as against multiple point levy under VAT with set off of tax paid in State on purchases. The State-level VAT has certain distinct advantages over the earlier sales tax structure.

The VAT not only provides full set-off for input tax as well as tax on previous purchases, but it also abolishes the burden of several of the existing taxes, such as turnover tax, surcharge on sales tax, additional surcharge, special additional tax, etc. In addition, Central Sales Tax is also going to be phased out. As a result, the overall tax burden will be rationalized, and prices, in general will fall. Moreover, VAT replaces the existing system of inspection by a system of built-in self-assessment by traders and manufacturers.

The tax structure becomes simpler and more transparent. This significantly improves tax compliance and helps in increasing revenue growth and tax base. Dealers/manufacturers involved in the business of manufacturing/trading of goods are required to be registered with the government as per VAT Act applicable in State. All such registered dealers are required to file their returns with the Commercial Tax authority of the state as per the pre-decided frequency. There are certain goods which are exempted from VAT as notified by State Government from time to time.
