‘The Holy City of India’ has been selected among 3 cities for implementing Smart City project in Punjab and is gaining momentum to get shortlisted in the final round of Smart City Challenge where 20 cities would be selected in the first year.

The vibrant citizens of Amritsar are requested to post their views pertaining to municipal and city’s basic infrastructure such as water supply, electricity, sanitation, waste management, transport, parking, energy,housing, IT solutions,safety and security.

Residents are encouraged to give their ideas and suggestions at city level as well as local area level solutions in Amritsar.

Smart Water and Waste Management :
** As per a 2011 study of 1,405 cities by the ministry, only 50 per cent of urban areas have water supply connections, the average per capital supply of water is only half of the 135 lpcd benchmark, water is supplied on an average for only three hours as opposed to the ideal of 24 hours

** Waste disposal and sewage treatment plants are missing in most Indian cities
** 30 per cent of the households have no toilets, the coverage of the sewage network is merely 12 per cent while the treatment of sewage is even lower at 3 per cent

** Solid waste management services cover only 35 per cent of the households while less than ten per cent of the waste is disposed scientifically
** Most of the untreated sewage is discharged into rivers, ponds or lakes, which is the main source of municipal water

Smart Environment :
** According to a World Health Organisation (WHO) study, Delhi has surpassed Beijing and is currently the most polluted city in the world. This puts its people at a dangerous risk of respiratory diseases.

** India, as a country, releases the fourth largest amount of CO2 emissions
** 627,000 die every year of particulate air pollution

** Use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides and the push for genetically modified crops have affected land fertility
** Native forests in India are disappearing at a rate of up to 2.7 percent per year

Welcome to the official site of the Amritsar Municipal Corporation. Amritsar was declared a city on 29th March 1977 under the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act 1976 and the Municipal Corporation was constituted in place of Municipal Committee.

The City of Amritsar got a Town Committee in 1858 and a Municipal Committee in 1868. The first election to the Municipal Corporation was held in 1991 and the city was divided into 50 wards.
