How does Organ Donation Work

Transplants post brain death must be done very soon after death to ensure the organs remain suitable for transplantation, and the person who has died is not deprived of the opportunity to donate.

However, organ donation itself will not take place unless you, in your lifetime, expressed a wish to donate, or the person closest to you in life gives their permission.

Donation after Brain Death
Once the patient is admitted, all efforts are made to stabilize the patient. If those efforts fail, the patient is pronounced brain-dead, but only after the doctor’s evaluation, testing and documentation.

What do I need to do
Almost anyone can donate organs and tissues – there is no age limit on the donation of some organs and tissues. The determining factors are where and how a person dies, and the conditions of their organs and tissues. While your age and medical history will be considered, you shouldn’t assume you’re too young, too old or not healthy enough to become a donor.

Our mission is to spread awareness about organ donation in India. Once you register your wish on this website, you can download and print your donor card which will state your consent to having your organs and tissue made available for transplantation upon your death.

2. Inform and discuss with your family and dear ones :
The most important thing is that after you have made your decision about whether to become an organ donor – and register that decision – you must discuss your wishes with your family. Organ and tissue donation cannot proceed without the consent of the family.

3. Always carry your donor card :
Always carry an Organ Donor Card in your wallet. It is important for your family to be aware of your wishes as WITHOUT their consent your organs / tissue cannot be donated.
