GS1 Company Prefix (GCP) :
GCP is a part of the GS1 Identification number consisting of a GS1 Prefix and a Company Number, both of which are allocated by GS1 Organisations. GS1 India assigns GCP to its subscribers who administer the allocation of GS1 Identification numbers.

Item ID :
The GS1 subscribers allocate unique item ID for each item/product variant/ SKUs.

Check Digit calculation :
Check digit is calculated by using the digits present in GCP and Item ID parts of a GS1 identification number. This calculation, called the Modulo 10 algorithm, is same for all GS1 primary identification numbers.
Every time a computer decodes a GS1 barcode number it repeats the calculation and checks its answer against the check digit to verify the data integrity of the number.

What is GS1 Identification system?
The GS1 Identification System provides two types of identifiers. The first or primary identifiers are called GS1 ID keys. It includes Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), Global Location Number (GLN), Global Returnable Asset Identifier (GRAI), etc.

The GS1 identification keys allow the retrieval of information stored in computer databases. Besides ID keys, the GS1 Identification System also include Application Identifiers (AIs) to provide information about key ” attributes”, such as lot numbers, expiration date, etc.

What is a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN)?
The Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) is the foundation of the GS1 System of standards. It is used for uniquely and universally identifying trade items, which includes both products and services that are sold, delivered, and invoiced at any point in the supply chain.

Is a unique GTIN required for every level of packaging?
Yes. There should be a unique GTIN identifying a consumer unit, an inner pack, a multi-pack, a case, or a pallet, wherever applicable.

When is a “9” used as the Indicator digit in a GTIN?
It is used to indicate a variable measure product.

What are examples of locations that can be assigned GLNs?
GLNs are reference keys for retrieving information from databases about physiacal location (stores, manufacturing centers, warehouses , sales offices, etc.), legal entities (corporate headquarter, etc.) and funtional locations (vending machines, bottling unit, etc.).
