Review & Monitoring System:

At the State level every month Hon’ble Food Minister review the functioning of the PDS in this State. Secretary to Government, Co-operation,Food and Consumer Protection Department every week (Monday ) review the FCI supply / movement of Essential Commodities to Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation godowns.

He also review every month the enforcement performance of the Civil Supplies CID with regards to seizures of essential commodities and the persons arrested / detained for the irregularities. Commissioner of Civil Supplies every month review the functioning of PDS at the State level with officials concerned.

District Magistrates every week (Monday ) review the functioning of the PDS with regards to availability at Taluk godown , movement of essential commodities to fair price shops on distribution of essential commodities to the card holders with district officials of the Civil Supplies , Co-operatives and Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation.

Price Monitoring Cell:
** Price Monitoring Cell is functioning as one of the three organs of the Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department.
** The main functions of the Price Monitoring Cell, is to collect and collate information from various sources on the trend of prices of essential commodities, both wholesale and retail and make recommendations to the Government, in case of any control measures are to be called for to hold the price line.
** Created in the year 1963, the Price Monitoring Cell headed by a Special Officer in the cadre of Joint Director of Statistics drafted from the Department of Economics and Statistics, is functioning under the control of Commissioner of Civil Supplies.
** The Special Officer is assisted by the statistical personnel drawn from the Department of Economics and Statistics, viz; one Statistical Officer, three Statistical Inspectors, two Assistant Statistical Investigators, and One Senior Draughtsman.
** Out of the 32 districts (excluding Chennai District), in 20 Districts, one Statistical Inspector from the Department of Economics and Statistics is posted in the Office of the District Supply Officer for collecting data on the movement of essential commodities and their prices.

System of Data Collection by Price Monitoring Cell:
** In the districts, Statistical Inspectors are collecting price details for essential commodities in the district head quarters as well as from other important market centers.
** They furnish the prices of 60 essential commodities on a daily basis. 146 commodities and State border area prices on weekly basis, and the prices of 36 commodities on fortnightly /monthly basis to the Price Monitoring Cell in the Office of the Commissioner of Civil Supplies.
** In addition, prices of various eatables sold in the hotels are being collected and analyzed. The District Collectors are kept informed about the same so as to enable the district administration to have a check on the price line. The price trends are closely monitored by the District Collectors by this mechanism.
** At Head Office, Chennai City’s daily Wholesale and Retail price details for essential commodities are collected by the Price Monitoring Cell from important market centres. The details collected are compiled, analysed and sent to the Government with a brief note on the price and market trends.
** Based on the reports received from the districts, periodicals on various groups of commodities are prepared and sent to the Government of Tamil Nadu, Government of India and neighbouring States.
** Since documentation is one of the important and essential items of work, the price details collected in the districts are received through online. All the periodical reports are generated through online.

System of Price Collection for GOI online reporting Centres:
Daily wholesale and retail prices of 24 essential commodities are being reported to Food and Consumer Affairs Department,Government of India through online from Chennai, Tiruchirapalli, Dindigul, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli centres.

Price Watch Committee:
The Government of Tamil Nadu has also constituted a Committee to monitor the prices of essential commodities on a regular basis. Such monitoring enables the Government to foreseen any unprecedented price rise in respect of essential commodities.

Reports:

** Daily, Weekly, Monthly Reports are being sent to the Government. Apart from collecting price data from the markets concerned, associations are also contacted for corroborating the data collected and to know the demand and arrival trend of essential commodities.

** As and when market trend changes, as the prices of essential commodities are subject to fluctuations, urgent reports are prepared by contacting concerned traders and merchants and sent to the Government for making necessary price control measures by way of market intervention.
