What is Assam Amrit Brikshya Andolan?

Amrit Brikshya Andolan (ABA) is a massive tree planting initiative launched by the Government of Assam in 2023. The goal of the initiative is to plant 1 crore (10 million) seedlings across the state in a single day, on September 17, 2023. The name “Amrit Brikshya Andolan” comes from the Assamese words “amrit,” meaning “nectar,” and “brikshya,” meaning “tree.” The initiative is seen as a way to improve the state’s environment and provide economic benefits to its citizens.

The ABA has four main objectives:
** To increase the tree cover in Assam from 36% to 40%.
** To create a carbon sink to help mitigate climate change.
** To provide a sustainable source of income for farmers and other rural communities.
** To raise awareness about the importance of trees and the environment.

The ABA has been met with a positive response from the public. Over 10 lakh (1 million) people have registered to participate in the initiative, and more than 1 crore seedlings have been distributed. The government has also provided financial assistance to participants to help them cover the costs of planting and maintaining the trees.

The ABA is a significant undertaking, and its success will depend on the continued support of the government, the public, and the private sector. If successful, the ABA could have a major impact on the environment and economy of Assam.
