Issuance of Driver’s License :
A Driver’s License is an official document issued by a competent authority authorizing the person specified therein to drive any motor vehicle or vehicles of the specified class or description.

Necessity for Driver’s License :
Under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 in India, no person can drive a motor vehicle in any public place unless he holds a valid Driver’s License issued to him, authorizing him to drive a vehicle of that particular category.
Eligibility :
1. You should have a Learner’s License to drive the vehicle of the type to which application relates.
2. You should apply after 30 days and within 180 days from the date of issue of Learner License.
3. You should be conversant about the vehicle systems, driving, traffic rules and regulations.
Where to Apply :
For obtaining a Driver’s License, you will need to apply in the prescribed forms to the District Transport Office in your region during public dealing hours, preferably between 10 :00am to 2:00pm.
Documents Required :
1. Form No.4 (Application Form for License to drive Motor Vehicle) available in the office/downloaded from website.
2. Form No.1A (Medical Certificate) available in the office/downloaded from website in case of Professional/Commercial License.
3. Valid Learner’s License.
4. Two copies of recent passport size photograph.
5. Form No.5 (Driving Certificate issued by Learning School) in case of Professional/Commercial License.
Fee :
For one class of vehicle : ` 340/-.
For two classes of vehicle : ` 440/-.
(Including charge for Issue of License, test of Competence to Drive and grant of Driving License.)
Procedure :
You will have to visit with all the required documents to the District Transport Office in your region. After submission of specified fees and verification of all your documents, you will be provided a challan on which the time and venue of the Driving Test will be mentioned.
On the mentioned date you must reach the venue on time. For driving test you have to bring your vehicle with you. You will be tested for your driving skills, familiarization with the vehicle, traffic rules & regulations. You can be asked about the vehicle system and safety. On passing the test, you will be issued a Driver’s License. To collect your license you will need to visit the District Transport Office in which you applied.
Eligibility :
** The Driver’s License is generally issued to the applicant within 15 working days.
** The maximum time for disposal is of 30 working days.
Validity :
** For Private Vehicles 20 years, or up to the age of 50 years, whichever is less.
** For Commercial Vehicles 3 years
** After the age of 50, the license will be renewed for a period of 5 years at a time.
Renewal :
An applicant should apply for renewal of his Driver’s License within 30 days from the date of expiry of its validity.
