Mid-Day Meal Scheme:
The National Programme of Nutritional Support to Primary Education (NP-NSPE), popularly known as “Mid-Day Meal Scheme” was launched in this State on 15th August, 1995.

The main objective of this scheme is to give boost to universalisation of primary education by increasing enrolment, retention and attendance and simultaneously impacting on nutrition of the students of primary classes (Class I to V). Under this programme, rice is distributed free of cost at the rate of 100 gms per student per day or 3 kg per student per month for 10 academic months in a year subject to the condition of 80% attendance. The scheme has been introduced in all the districts including Calcutta Municipal area .

Textbooks are being distributed free of cost to all the students of recognised primary schools upto Class V. Free school dress was being provided to the girl students of primary schools (100% for SC/ST and 25% amongst the economically backward girl students). It has since been decided to extend the scheme to all the girl students irrespective of their social category and economic condition.

Balika Samriddhi Yojana:
With an object to keep proper balance between men and women, and for proper social and financial development of women the central government has initiated an integrated programme namely the “Balika Samriddhi Yojana” for girl children from the financial year of 1998-99. The objective of this programme is to provide for scope for growth of girl children with due respect.

In this project the families earmarked in Swarna Jayanti Sahari Rojgar Yojana, where girl children has born on or after the 15th August, 1947, will be considered for being paid a sum of Rs. 500/- at a time through the Municipality, but not more than two girl children of a family will get such assistance.

Anandadhara :
The Government of India has launched The National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) under the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD). In West Bengal, NRLM has been launched as ANANDADHARA by the Honourable Chief Minister on 17th May, 2012.

The agenda is to mobilize the rural poor and vulnerable people into self- managed, federated institutions and support them for livelihood collectives. In addition, the poor would be facilitated to achieve increased access to their rights, entitlements and public services, diversified risk and better social indicators of empowerment.

To further these objectives, WBSRLM (West Bengal State Rural Livelihoods Mission), a registered society under the Society Registration Act 1860 has been formed by the Government of West Bengal to implement the National Rural Livelihood Mission in the state.
